It is known to all that postgraduate research plays a vital role in advance of various subjects. However, the investment is so limited that many people maintain that the government should only support the scientific ones which are useful so that greater profits can be generated. Personally, I can not agree with this view.
No one can question the importance of scientific research as it is closely related with our living standard and earns great advantage for a nation. However, if only science was emphasized, the society would lose balance. More essentially, it is hard to distinguish “useful” from “useless.”
In order to solve this problem, the government can take action from at least three aspects: First, the government should collect more funds via legislative rules or it can employ some companies to do so. Taxation and investment can be strong supports to school research. Second, the research laboratories should and have to use fund distributed efficiently and effectively. Although the government has the obligation to support their researches, they can never waste the money on private expenditures. Last but not the least, the government as the macro leader, it should not judge the value of something in a short-sighted view. Subjects which are seemingly useless at the present stage probably have great potential in the future.
To sum up, it is an inevitable obligation to invest money in doing research for college students and staff. And the government should treat all subjects equally without narrow minds.
