法兰克王国的王朝。751年，法兰克王国的宫相矮子丕平在贵族、尤其是教皇的支持下，废黜墨洛温国王，自己登上了王位，建立加洛林王朝。754年，教皇又为其加冕。为了报答教皇，他征服了伦巴第人，并把意大利中部的部分地区赠与教皇，从而奠定了教皇国的基础。查理曼统治时期（768—814），加洛林王朝的势力达到鼎盛。在此期间，法兰克封建化完成。814年，查理曼死后，加洛林帝国即告分裂。843年查理曼的三个孙子签定《凡尔登条约》三分帝国。
