I/O接口与I/O通道是计算机主机与外部连接的桥梁，常用的I/O接口有并行接口和串行接口。I/O通道有模拟量I/O通道和数字量I/O通道。其中模拟量I/O通道的作用是，一方面将经由传感器得到的工业对象的生产过程参数变换成二进制代码传送给计算机；另一方面将计算机输出的数字控制量变换为控制操作执行机构的模拟信号，以实现对生产过程的控制。数字量通道的作用是，除完成编码数字输入输出外，还可将各种继电器、限位开关等的状态通过输入接口传送给计算机，或将计算机发出的开关动作逻辑信号经由输出接口传送给生产机械中的各个电子开关或电磁开关。
