There are two species of elephant, the African elephant and the Asian. Loss of habitat and deforestation threaten both species of elephant. Today only 600,000 African elephant survive in the wild. Although elephants can live for up to 60-70 years, with the threat from ivory poaching few mature elephants with good ivory reach this age.
