美国行为科学家布莱克等人1964年指出，企业中的领导方式，存在着对"人的关心"和"对生产的关心"两种不同的结合。他们提出的管理方格法，主要是为了避免在企业管理的领导中趋于极端的方式，即或者是科学管理，或者是人际管理；或者以生产为中心，或者以人为中心；或者以X理论为依据，或者以Y理论为依据。
应该采取各种综合领导方式，该领导方式可用方格表示：纵轴表示对人的关心，自下而上，关心的程度由低而高；横轴表示对生产的关心，自左而右，关心的程度由低而高。共有81个小方格代表着81种"对生产的关心"和"对人的关心"这两个基本因素以不同的比例相结合的领导方式。管理方格论可用来培训管理人员。
