青铜器上的铭文。青铜器有铭文始于商代中期，商代青铜器铭文一般文字较少，大多仅记器主族氏、名字及所祭先人等，寥寥数字，字数最多这亦仅四十余字。周代铭文字数显著增加，内容亦有发展，多说明做器原因和用途，包括一些重要的事件，如祀典、锡命、征伐、契约等，有的长达几百字，如西周前期的小盂鼎有三百九十余字，西周的后期的毛公鼎达四百九十七字。到战国中晚期，长篇铭文较少，多为“物勒工名”即记载监造者名、工匠名、器名、置于所在等。铭文多为铸成，自春秋时期起有刻成的，字体亦随时代变迁而有变化。
