一般氮肥和钾肥是在7～8对叶时追施效果较好。但播种时没施肥的土地，必须早追肥。生产上采用穴施法，如密植也可采用条施法。一般是在距向日葵根茎基部10～15厘米处刨小坑施肥，随即覆土。施肥深度，视追肥种类及土壤墒情而定，碳酸氢铵、氨水等容易挥发的肥料应深施，天旱土干的情况下也应深施。如利用中耕和早期追肥时，可结合第一次中耕，耕深8～10厘米，必须离苗15厘米左右。晚期追肥时，可结合最后一次中耕，肥料可以施于行间，耕深仍然为8～10厘米。
在花期或灌浆期，发现向日葵植株缺乏某种元素，根际追肥已来不及的情况下，采用叶面喷施。喷施微量元素锰、钼、锌等，可提高产量和含油率。微量元素溶液浓度要控制在0.005％左右。叶面喷施0.1％的尿素溶液也有明显的增产效果
