1493年5月在罗马教皇亚历山大六世仲裁下，西班牙和葡萄牙瓜分殖民地的分界线。规定在亚速尔群岛和佛德角群岛以西100里格的子午线为分界线，并把该线以西的一切土地都划归西班牙，以东的一切土地归葡萄牙。1494年，西葡两国又缔结托德西拉斯条约，把这条线向东移动270里格。当时西班牙人认为自己在这个条约中占了便宜，相信到印度去的航路是在西方。但实际上这条分界限使得葡萄牙人取得了绕道非洲到印度去的航路上所有据点。
